Hold that thought....
Mood:  incredulous

In what has been the busiest day in Mortfolio's three-year history, we have two celebrities passing away on the same day. So the leadership of Mortfolio '06 changes intraday!

See below for Lou Rukeyser. See here for Earl Woods.

Woods, whose DNA is responsible for one of the centuries finest athletes in Eldrick "Tiger" Woods, succumbed to a long battle with prostate cancer today at age 74.

In the spirit of brevity, here's the math:

SOLO Hit for Buying the Farm : 25 pts
Age (125-74)= 51
Confidence Kicker *1.0 for a total of 76 pts.

Updated Standings (man, my fingers are sore from all this typing):

Buy the Farm 182 - Reave (solo), Woods (solo)
Mark M 148 - Winters, Rukeyser
Brian G 114 - Rukeyser
Vince R 105 - Coretta Scott King (solo)
Rat Pack 93 - Winters

Gotta give love to the Farm for two solo hits in five months!

What have we learned today? Eat more vegetables. Per Dr. Mehmet Oz in You: The Owner's Manual, 60% of cancer can be attributed to diet, and 75% of diabetes can be attributed to nutrition.

The passing of a dismal scientist...
Mood:  d'oh

Brian G's patience finally pays off - financial journalist and TV host Louis Rukeyser passed away last night at the age of 73.

As host of Wall Street Week, he gave birth to the widespread public adoption of the financial news media. Should we also credit the show's start in 1973 with creating the feedback loop of success in AMerica that fueled the greatest bull market of our lives? Lou can also be credited for spawning the current crop of Kramers on stock TV.

Some would say that W$W "jumped the shark" upon his exit, but it kept on with lame hosts like Bill Griffeths of CNBC.

Oh yeah, off the soapbox - Lou's stock has a Q on the end. Here is the scoring....

(125-73)= 52 raw points. Multiply times the confidence kicker (1.3 for Mark M, 1.9 for Brian G).
Now add 15 point bonuses to each for the final tally of 83 for Mark, and a whopping 114 for the B.G.!

We have a new leader...

Mark M 148 - Winters, Rukeyser
Brian G 114 - Rukeyser
Vince R 105 - CSK
Rat Pack 93 - Winters

Now Playing: WTF?
To borrow the Pro Golfer's catch phrase, the "Buying the Farm" team may stretch out their current lead before the end of the first quarter.

In addition to being one of many on the Ariel Sharon watch, reports out of Jacksonville have Tiger Woods flying to Callifornia to tend to his ill father.

Earle Woods could be another solo hit for the Farm, whose roster already had Dana Reave pass on this year,

Host of the beloved game show "Press Your Luck" Peter Tomarken died Monday in a plane crash over California.

Story says that Tomarken and his wife (20 years younger) were volunteering their time and plane while piloting a sick child for treatment.

Very sad, as the "whammy" was a big part of my growing up in the 80's.

Two celebs pass in their forties, but only one selected on Mortfolio

We have a new leader - by one point!

Put Joan and Ann on the top of the list, as they get a solo hit and a young'un, as Dana Reevepasses away at age 44. The link is directly to the Christopher Reeve Foundation, supplying a number of links to possible charitable opportunities.

Also on the obituary list today laid 45 year old baseball Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett, who quickly gave in to a massive stroke. While he will always be remembered for an infectious smile and his heroics in 1987 World Series, A 2003 SI piece by Frank DeFord shed light on other possible infections.

Joan and Ann take over the lead with 106 points:

(125-44)*1.0 = 81 +25 solo bonus.

CSK is DOA...

After a long battle recovering from heart issues, Coretta Scott King dies at age 78 early Tuesday morning.

from ajc.com: "Last spring, Coretta King was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, which causes the heart to quiver instead of beat regularly. The condition led to a major stroke and a minor heart attack on Aug. 16. She was trying to recover from the stroke, which impaired her right side and speech, at the time of her death."

Luckily, I saw this note last year and added her to my watch list...interesting that Rosa Parks and CSK both have passed away very recently, as both were instrumental to the civil rights movement...

And CSK was instrumental to early returns in Mortfolio 2006. Your humble caretaker got the solo hit out of the 1.7 CK spot, so here is the math...

(125-78)*1.7 = 80, plus 25 unique hit equals 105.

First blood in the dead of winter...
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Death Score
We have the first hit of the year, and it is a name that has been on many watchlists for years.

After being hospitalized in October after suffering a heart attack, Shelly Winters passes away at the age of 85.

(125-85)= 40pts for the age, but here come the bonus points...

Rat Pack had the 1.7 confidence kicker to bump it up to 68 points, Mark M had the 1.0 (lack of) confidence kicker to grab 40 points.
Each coroner gets the first blood bonus of 10 pts, and the shared hit bonus of 15 pts.

SO here are your standings...

Rat Pack 93
